Hi friends,
Some of you might not know but I'm currently in Amsterdam.
Today, I went and saw my very first real windmill. Very cool. Buts that's
not why I'm writing.
Here's why I'm writing: I want to give you an update on some very specific
changes that we are making for this semester. These changes are predicated
on us looking toward the fall i.e. they are small steps we are going to take
to get us ready for the fall of 09.
First, after much consideration and dialogue with the elder board we have
made a decision to suspend Large Group for the semester. It's no single
person's responsibility rather it is the culmination of a number of factors.
One, we had large group once a month as a way to celebrate and teach and
exhort one another. I believe we are doing that in the combined Home Group
time. There was also a time when I had 2 elders co-laboring with me, but
that is not the case. I love Large Group! But I think that more often than
not we served it rather than Large Group really serving us. The intention
for LG has always been for it to be a soul-awakening event; a place where we
invite friends to come taste and see that God is good. PLEASE, if you have
any questions don't hesitate to email me or call me when I get back to the
States next week.
C.S. Lewis once said that "the church is the only organization that exists
for the benefit of non-members." So, in our mission here of leading ISU
students into the kingdom we are going to do a couple of things this
semester. You will hear more about these things but here they are: a
broomball tourney and an Evangelism Seminar (Karen had mentioned these). We
are also going to be doing dinner line surveys in the dorms to gauge
spiritual interest and hopefully meet some new people.
In the fall we are going to attempt to do a couple of new things - staying
the same will be Home Groups and cHG - but different will be the launch of
investigative small groups in the dorms. I think this will be a significant
new ministry and I expect great things to happen (I just spent some time
praying about it before dinner on my walk that ended up getting me lost and
in a different city. Whoops). Also new will be a 5 or 6 week Sunday
morning service from the time school starts to the fall retreat. We are
ironing out the details but I expect this to be a great time to meet new
people! The goal of this is to move people into community either small
groups or home groups.
At this point some of you may have a number a questions. I realize that. I
will be speaking about this at the first cHG of the year - you'll get a
chance to hear my heart and the things God has been doing in my life and my
hope for cornerstone then!!!
I truly love and appreciate all of you!
Mike
